NatRem is described as a ‘natural sleep aid’. Yet it is easily one of the weakest sleeping aids that we’ve ever reviewed. It contains a tiny dose of theanine – too small to have any kind of meaningful effect on your sleeping patterns. Valerian Root is a substandard anxiolytic; it works reasonably well for some people but it is highly variable. It contains a generous dose of melatonin, but that is the only ingredient capable of influencing your sleeping patterns. Hardly a potent, competitive sleep supplement.
Physician’s choice? We highly doubt it. There’s too much dead weight in here for us to consider using it. NatRem is not even close to being competitive in today’s market.

NatRem is a natural sleep aid from Physician’s Choice. Physician’s Choice is a little known manufacturing outfit. However, if you head over to their official website, you’ll see that they aren’t some garage-run outfit. Their website looks legit, and they have a small but substantial range of products on offer: prebiotics, some single-ingredient stacks, and of course, NatRem – their sleeping stack.
So what is NatRem supposed to do exactly?
Who is it designed for?
As you can probably guess from the name, the main stated purpose of NatRem is to promote REM sleep. If you look at the box, you’ll see a number of key benefits listed:

- Helps you fall asleep naturally
- Makes you feel refreshed when you wake up
Promoting REM sleep in particular is a very good thing for a sleep supplement to target. REM sleep is a particular stage of sleep characterized by rapid eye movements (hence REM), intense dreams, elevated heart rate, and overall more brain activity.
REM sleep is extremely important for our health, both mental and physical. At present we actually have a very poor understanding of exactly what takes place during REM sleep, but we do know that it seems to be the stage during which we encode memory, and it is perhaps the most efficient, restorative phase of sleep.
Without some good stretches of REM sleep, we wake feeling more groggy and irritable – not what we want!
So all this sounds great.
The question is, does Physician’s Choice NatRem really deliver on these promises?

Let’s take a look at the Physician’s Choice NatRem formula and see if ti really packs the punch that the manufacturer says it does:
Unfortunately, we’re not impressed with what we see here.
For a stack that promises so much, we expected a lot more than this.
We’re especially surprised to see so many unproven, ineffective ingredients coming from a brand called ‘Physician’s Choice’.
No physician would have advised such low doses!
Let’s go through this in a bit more detail.

To NatRem’s credit, it does contain some ingredients capable of reducing anxiety and supporting sleep.
For example, each nightly serving of NatRem gives us a fairly good dose of Valerian Root. This anxiolytic does help reduce feelings of stress and anxiety in some people.
It has been known to significantly decrease anxiety and even some feelings of depression when taken regularly. This would improve sleep quality for those people who tend to stay awake at night worrying about their jobs, their finances, or their love life.
Our issue is that Valerian Root is not a reliable or even particularly potent anxiolytic. It doesn’t work for everyone, and even when ti does, results are not as significant as they could be when using other, more powerful anxiolytics. A better choice would have been Rhodiola Rosea.
It is also worth adding an anxiolytic to a sleep aid, but we would prefer a more robustly proven, effective one.
We also get a very good serving of melatonin in each serving of Physician’s Choice NatRem.
Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating your circadian rhythm. It makes you feel awake in the morning and tired at night. It controls the patterns of your sleep cycles too.
So a good serving of melatonin will help ensure that you are getting nice, long stretches of REM sleep each night.
Supplementing with melatonin at the same time each night will also make your sleeping patterns more regular.
Most sleep supplements will provide about 2mg of melatonin. We don’t think you need any ore than this, but the 5mg in this stack certainly shouldn’t hurt.

The main problem with this stack is a pretty big one.
To put it bluntly, most of the ingredients in NatRem won’t do a damn thing to help you sleep better. That’s because they are either dosed too low to have any noticeable effect, or because they are straight-up dead weight.
For example, theanine is an extremely effective natural sleep aid…in theory.
Multiple clinical studies have shown that it can induce the onset of sleep, enhance the quality of your sleep, and more generally reduce stress and anxiety to make sure you aren’t lying awake at night worrying about trivial things.
It also reduces the side effects of caffeine consumption – irritability and insomnia being the most relevant to us here.
But theanine is only effective when consumed in amounts in excess of 200mg. There aren’t any studies showing theanine as having a meaningful impact on sleep where participants have been given less than 200mg.
Much more usual is about 400mg per night.
The 50mg we get from NatRem is not good enough!
Physician’s Choice NatRem Side Effects
NatRem doesn’t look like it is going to cause any real problems for the vast majority of users.
Its ingredients are all fairly standard for sleep supplements. They have all been thoroughly studied for use in consumer supplements, and they have not been found to pose a serious risk to health.
One ingredient that may sound a bit worrying is pyridoxal-5-phosphate. But don’t be scared (or impressed) – this is just a slightly different form of Vitamin B6.
We don’t know why it is in a sleeping supplement, but it certainly isn’t a serious side effect risk.
Overall, we think this stack is generally safe for long-term use. The main concern is actually that it wont do an awful lot!

Final Verdict – Physician’s Choice NatRem – Should You Use It?
We’re seriously disappointed with this stack.
It provides a good serving of melatonin; that’s the only real benefit, and it does not justify paying of the entire stack.
The other ingredients are all either seriously under-dosed or totally useless anyway.
The physician’s choice this product clearly is not!
NatRem does not represent a good choice for anybody, whether your goal is to fix your sleeping pattern after a flight or enhancing the quality of your sleep. Much better sleep supplements are available.
