NOW True Focus Review Summary
The NOW True Focus formula is pretty unimpressive. It contains a couple of effective cognitive enhancers, but they aren’t particularly powerful. There are really only two potent nootropics here, and one of them is dosed far too low to have any kind of real impact on your mental performance. The rest of the ingredients are pretty much benign. They might contribute to overall good health and brain function, but not in a noticeable, meaningful way.
The biggest flaw is the lack of a reliable cholinergic. A supplement with “focus” in the name should really have a powerful cholinergic in the formula. One that works well for everybody. NOW True Focus does not. If you want a nootropic that will significantly improve cognitive function on a day to day basis, NOW True Focus is not the best option. Better stacks are available.
Where To Buy NOW True Focus
NOW FOODS runs a comprehensive independent online store. We think you should always try to buy direct.
Full NOW True Focus Review
NOW Foods is easily one of the biggest, most successful supplement brands in the world. You have almost definitely seen their simple, distinct packaging before now. They have a staggering range of products and they are sold in just about every supplement store in the Western World. Many mistakenly think of NOW products as a generic or “own brand” option, so simplistic is their branding.
We have already reviewed their vision enhancer, Ocu Support, and found it to be solid product.
So what is True Focus supposed to do?
Who is it designed for?
As you can see on the bottle, True Focus is described as a “neurotransmitter support” supplement. As it has “focus” in the name, we expect a lot of neurotransmitter support!
According to NOW Foods, True Focus delivers the following core benefits:
- Elevated focus
- Maximizes mental acuity
- Promotes positive mood
That is a very nice range of benefits. A dedicated focus supplement should of course direct most of its resources to increasing focus. It has focus in the name, so focus is what we want above all else.
We also like to see that this stack also helps with mood. A lack of motivation or high levels of anxiety can be just as damaging to your work as a lack of focus, low energy levels, and so on.
So this all sounds great.
The question is, does NOW True Focus really work?
What are the main side effect risks? Is True Focus dangerous?
Can it compete with the best focus boosters on the market today?
We answer all of these questions and more in the full NOW True Focus review below. We begin, as always, with a thorough examination of the formula – ingredients, serving sizes, and side effect risks. We use the latest scientific literature as our guide; do the ingredients really work as NOW Foods say that they do? If you have any questions, please post them in the comments section at the end.
NOW True Focus Formula
Let’s cut to the chase and take a look at the True Focus formula:
We didn’t expect too much from NOW Foods,. They tend to produce quite simple, straightforward supplements.
We were extremely impressed with their vision enhancer. But that doesn’t mean they’ll also produce a good nootropic.
Unfortunately, this is worse than we expected.
There are a few good nootropics in here. But one is dosed too low to have a real impact on your cognition, and neither are really strong enough to be “main” ingredients.
We expected to see a lot more firepower here.
On the whole, much better natural nootropic supplements are available.
What We Like
Overall, we don’t think this is a very powerful or good value focus supplement. Other nootropics can provide much better results for a similar price.
However, there are definitely some good features here.
The main selling point here is the very good dose of Tyrosine.
NOW True Focus delivers 800mg of Tyrosine per serving. That is far more than you will get from the vast majority of nootropic stacks – even high quality ones.
Tyrosine is a simple amino acid with some impressive properties. Most notable is its ability to support cognitive function during times of acute environmental stress.
To put it more simply, Tyrosine helps you stay focused while you are subjected to serious stress, both mental and physical. This has now been established by several robust clinical trials. For instance, this trial found that Tyrosine helps sustain cognitive function in low oxygen environments.
This study found that Tyrosine helped with cognitive performance in people subjected to loud noise interference.
Clearly, Tyrosine helps you stay focused, keeps your head clear, and helps your memory while you are being subjected to stressful situations.
This is why Tyrosine is a favorite of students and athletes – people who regularly need to stay calm and collected for long, highly stressful periods of time.
NOW True Focus provides more than enough Tyrosine for you to enjoy all of the benefits associated with this simple yet powerful nootropic agent.
What We Don’t Like
Sadly, the good dose of Tyrosine is just about the only thing we like here.
The rest of the formula is more or less just dead weight.
For instance, one of the best nootropics featured in the formula is Ginkgo Biloba.
This herb is known to increase cerebral blood flow without raising systemic blood pressure. Basically, it expands the blood vessels in your brain, allowing for more oxygen and nutrients to be delivered.
Yet at does below about 60mg, Ginkgo biloba is practically useless.
We only get 40mg of Ginkgo in NOW True Focus. Users are not going to experience the full potential of this excellent natural nootropic substance.
This is seriously disappointing.
The other ingredients are all basically just dead weight.
It isn’t that they’re under-dosed. It’s that they’re not thought to have any nootropic properties at all.
CoQ10, for example, is often found in health supplements these days. It is used in health creams, joint supplements, and so on.
But we’ve never seen any evidence that supplementing with CoQ10 does anything at all.
We have no idea why it is sometimes added to nootropic stacks.
Until we see a hard clinical trial which found it to increase focus, memory function, or mental clarity, we’re going to continue to think nothing of it.
Grape Seed Extract has no known cognitive enhancing properties.
Many people rightly point out that grapes contain antioxidants and polyphenols. These contribute to better overall mental and physical health. Antioxidants in particular are a good thing to include in your daily nootropic stack.
They protect brain cells from damage, thereby supporting long-term cognitive function.
But we don’t know which polyphenols this grape seed extract is providing, or if the extract provides any anti-oxidants whatsoever.
We would much rather see how the extract is standardized (we like percentages), or just a straight up resveratrol dose.
A lot of the NOW True Focus formula is ineffective.
You are paying for several ingredients that provide no real added nootropic benefit.
That is never good.
NOW True Focus Side Effects
A weak, relatively ineffective nootropic will usually be one that poses few side effect risks.
Not so with NOW True Focus.
As mentioned at the beginning, NOW True Focus doesn’t provide a reliable, potent cholinergic. Instead, it uses DMAE.
This stuff is technically a cholinergic, but it is extremely unreliable. Some people get good benefits from it, others experience absolutely nothing.
More worryingly, however, many people experience quite unpleasant side effects while using DMAE on a regular basis. These side effects can include:
- Muscle cramps
- Loss of motivation
- Loss of focus
We don’t understand why any modern nootropic stack uses DMAE. There are plenty of alternatives available; alternatives not known to regularly cause the same range of side effects.
Things like CDP-Choline and Choline Bitartrate are not only safer and more reliable, but they are actually much more effective too.
Monitor yourself carefully while using this stack, and if you experience any side effects whatsoever, seek medical attention immediately.
It is important that you remember the following when reading our reviews:
- We are NOT doctors
- This is NOT medical advice
- Every individual is different
We don’t know you or your medical history. All we can do is talk about the general risk of side effects. If something seems safe for 99% of people, it is not necessarily safe for you. You MUST do your own research and talk to a qualified health professional before continuing.
NOW True Focus Review Conclusion
This isn’t the most powerful focus supplement on the market at the moment, to put it mildly.
We didn’t expect much from this stack, but we were still left a little disappointed.
If you have time, we recommend you go back and read the full NOW True Focus review. But if you don’t, then just bare this in mind: it uses a substandard cholinergic known for its unreliability and side effects; it low doses one of the 2 key ingredients; the rest of the formula is basically benign.
If you want to increase your focus and mental clarity, be it for work, studying, or just your day-to-day cognitive performance, better stacks are out there. This nootropic will yield very meager results.
