Ever Heard Of Nootropic Gum?
Smart Caffeine Gum Is Soon To Be Mainstream
A trend we haven’t been able to avoid is the rapid growth of the caffeinated gum market.
Nootropics are beginning to find their way into a wide range of everyday consumer products; from drinks to candy, familiar brands are beginning to utilize nootropic substances to grow their product range.
This is in no small part because so many people are aware of nootropics these days. It is also no doubt due to the strains of the modern workplace. Productivity, performance, and stamina are everything today, so more people are looking for an edge. Manufacturers are queuing up to give it to them.
Nootropic energy gum is not the newest of these innovations, but it is one of the fastest growing, and it may turn out to be the most enduring.
Some of you may not have heard of nootropic gum, smart energy gum, or even caffeine gum for that matter.
We’re sure you will hear a lot more about nootropic gum in the near future, but until then, let us fill you in. In the following article, we’ll attempt to answer the following questions:
- Do these products work like other nootropics, or are they just gum with caffeine added in?
- Why would people use nootropic gum over a regular nootropic stack?
- Why would anyone use caffeine gum over a cup of coffee?
- Are these products safe?
But long before we get to these questions, we should probably address a much more fundamental and, for many of you, probably a much more nagging question: what is “smart energy gum”?
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, let us know by posting in the comments section below. We always aim to get back to you within a couple of days.
What Is Nootropic Gum?
You could reasonably call a great variety of products “nootropic gum”.
The exact composition of these products will vary of course. As the market matures and more manufacturers start competing for your money, this variety will only increase.
What all of the products share is the fact that they are chewable gum products with added ingredients which aid with cognitive performance in some way.
They are all very much convenience products. Like regular gum, they are designed to be easily carried around in your pocket.
They are also usually designed to be tasty. This is important; if it isn’t easy on the palate, then there is a very important part of the equation missing.
There are currently quite a few products on the market which could be called “nootropic gum”, “smart energy gum”, or simply caffeine gum.
Obviously, what they try to deliver varies product to product.
Some claim to be able to deliver deep cognitive enhancements such as enhanced memory, better performance under stress, or greater mental clarity.
Some claim to deliver immediate improvements in mental performance, such as enhanced focus and longer attention spans.
Others simply claim to deliver a quick, sharp caffeine boost to keep you alert, focused and awake for a few extra hours.
So now you know what nootropic gum is, you might be wondering why anyone would choose to use it.
What benefits does it have over regular nootropic supplements?
If you need a caffeine boost, why not just have a cup of coffee?
Why People Use Nootropic Gum
The idea of a chewing gum which helps with your mental functioning might seem a little out there at first, but there are a number of reasons why nootropic gum might be useful.
The main thing that makes these products stand out is their sheer convenience.
If you have a long string of very important, high-pressure meetings planned for the day, then you might not have time to keep going back and forth to the coffee maker.
You might find yourself sat in talks with clients or prospective employers for 2 hours straight without any chance of running off for your caffeine fix.
In this situation, being able to just pop a stick of gum in your mouth and get all the benefits of a cup of coffee is just what you need.
You don’t seem eager to leave a meeting, you aren’t falling asleep in your chair; instead, you’re wide eyed and alert, on top of your game mentally, and impressing the hell out of your new clients.
Another situation where both nootropic gum or caffeine gum might come in handy is while playing sports.
Our supplement review team are all active sports players. Some of them prefer individual sports such as boxing or MMA, while others prefer team sports like soccer (or football if you’re from Europe).
What all of these sports have in common is that, at some point, you’ll find yourself well into a game or a training session when your energy levels hit rock bottom. There will be plenty of time left on the clock, but you will have nothing left in the tank.
You can’t always run off the pitch at a moment’s notice to down an energy drink.
If you do, you’ll probably feel pretty sick afterwards due to all the sugar and the fizz in your stomach.
This is where caffeine gum would come in very handy.
Just slipping your hand into your pocket and chewing on a stick of “smart energy” gum would see you reinvigorated, re-energized and ready for the rest of the game, session, or whatever without having to down an energy drink.
This would be particularly useful while out running if you’re interested in losing fat. If you hit the “runner’s wall”, caffeine gum can help you push that little bit further without taking on any extra calories.
So there are plenty of reasons why someone might want to use nootropic energy gum instead of a nootropic supplement in capsule form.
If you’re locked in meetings or negotiations, nootropic gum offers a quick mental boost without having to take a coffee break, and without having to take a few pills in front of your clients or colleagues (which might look suspect).
If you’re a keen sports player gum with added caffeine can give you a sharp energy lift without you having to take on a load of sugar and liquid via an energy drink.
Just slip a pack of gum into your shorts when you next go running, out onto the field, or into the gym, and you have no need for sugar-loaded energy drinks. This will aid performance and fat loss – perfect!
All of these situations favor convenience over effectiveness. In such cases, “smart energy gum” is unquestionably perfect.
However, there are some areas in which nootropic gum falls far short of genuine nootropic supplements.
If you’re looking for genuine, deep, and lasting improvements in cognitive function, nootropic gum will never be able to deliver as well as a comprehensive, daily nootropic stack.
Limitations Of Nootropic Gum
While nootropic energy gum offers several advantages over traditional brain boosting supplements, there are many areas where “smart energy gum” cannot come close to offering the same benefits as regular nootropic stacks.
Once we remove the convenience factor, nootropic gum is almost invariably going to be weaker, more short-term focused, and less comprehensive than a proper nootropic supplement.
The reasons for this are several.
For one thing, nootropic gum simply doesn’t have the physical room to accommodate the breadth of quantity of ingredients found in the best, most comprehensive nootropics.
For another, nootropic gum isn’t really suited for regular, every day use. It is not easily standardized and regimented into habit.
You are much less likely to chew a stick of gum for the same amount of time each and every morning than you are to take a capsule at the same time each day.
Nootropic gum can actually become pretty inconvenient if you want something to use on a long-term basis.
Necking a couple of capsules with your breakfast is easy. Chewing a stick of gum for a few minutes is less so.
The fact that it is not optimal for regular, long-term use is a major issue if deep cognitive enhancement is what you want.
Deep Change Requires Long-Term Investment
The most profound changes in brain function require consistent and long-term investment on your part.
If you want an incredible memory, razor-sharp reaction times, unshakable focus and significantly improved mental clarity at all times of day, then you need to optimize your diet, your behavior, and your supplementation regime for months and years, not a day here and there.
For example, bacopa monnieri is one of the few substances on the planet genuinely capable to improving memory function.
It reliably makes people perform better on memory recall and retention tests after just a few weeks of supplementation.
However, it only becomes really effective after 6-12 weeks of taking bacopa monnieri every single day.
Once it starts having a positive effect on brain function, it doesn’t die down. It gets stronger.
The longer you use bacopa monnieri for, the more pronounced the benefits become.
Dipping into it doesn’t yield the same returns.
You wont notice any improvements in short-term memory recall if you just take a few hundred milligrams of bacopa once or twice a week for a few months.
The same is true of many of the most effective nootropic substances.
Perhaps the best example here is Lion’s Mane Mushroom.
We now know that Lion’s Mane Mushroom promotes the production of NGF (nerve growth factor). By doing so, it directly promotes brain nerve cell growth.
In promoting brain nerve cell growth, it allows your brain to maintain its physical structure more efficiently, and it allows you to capitalize on your higher level of cognitive function by physically adapting to it.
To put it another way: it lets your brain adapt to the new workload it is being placed under.
It lets your brain get stronger in response to the higher level of stimulus.
This is something that only the most effective, comprehensive, professional-grade nootropic stacks can achieve.
It is something that a nootropic gum you use now and again can never give you.
There is a universal truth in here: it takes daily investments to realize meaningful results.
What We Would Look For In A Good “Smart Gum”
There are many different things we would look for in a good nootropic gum supplement.
What makes a good nootropic gum supplement will vary according to what the product actually aims to deliver.
As we said above, different products can aim to deliver very different things: some aspire to enhance cognitive function generally, while others just aim to give you an energy kick.
However, there are some things which all products must offer if they are to be considered a “smart energy gum”.
They must contain some combination of the following if they are to have any chance of improving your focus, clarity, and attention-span:
- Ginkgo biloba
- Rhodiola rosea
- Cholinergic (e.g choline bitartrate)
Not all of these ingredients are necessary, and since they are being consumed through saliva after chewing, the quantities we would look for in the gum itself will differ from the quantities we look for in a nootropic stack.
However, for a gum product to be seriously considered a “smart energy” or nootropic product, it will need to contain some or all of these ingredients.
Other ingredients we always look for in a nootropic supplement have been left out as they only really work when used regularly and repeatedly. As such, they will offer little value in a nootropic gum product.
There is also an ideal caffeine dose which a gum must approximate to if it is to be considered a high-quality caffeine gum.
The amount of caffeine found in commercially-available caffeine gums will vary wildly. They will range from the pointless to the dangerous.
Generally speaking, we think 30-50mg of caffeine is sufficient for a serious caffeine gum supplement to have per serving.
This is less than you might find in a cup of coffee, but it is more than enough to provide the kind of energy jolt you might need in the boardroom, in the gym or on the field.
Consuming caffeine through your saliva is different to drinking it and allowing your stomach to digest it. it will hit your system much faster, and have a more pronounced effect.
As such, the equivalent of a small, weak cup of coffee is more than enough for 99% of users.
Is Caffeine Gum Safe?
There are, of course, safety concerns when it comes to using gum with added caffeine.
The main concern is obviously the danger of consuming too much caffeine.
It is really easy to consume too much caffeine through gum simply because you aren’t used to getting it this way. You don’t instinctively know when you’re having too much.
If you get all of your caffeine through coffee, then you know when you’re having too much: “No thanks, that’ll be 6 cups before 12. Better cool off…”.
But you can’t gauge it as easily with caffeine gum.
You can quite easily chew through 4 or 5 sticks before you realize what you’re doing. Gum is, by nature, an absent-minded consumable. You can get through a pack without blinking an eye. Since you’re also consuming caffeine as you chew this gum, this is a big danger.
The side effects of consuming too much caffeine are massively damaging to cognitive performance. They include anxiety, insomnia, jitteriness, light-headedness, lack of focus, confusion, and so on.
These side effects can become more pronounced if caffeine consumption remains high. Long term side effects of caffeine over-consumption can be extremely serious.
Is Nootropic Gum Right For You?
Whether or not a smart energy gum product is right for you depends entirely on your particular needs.
As explained above, there are things that a proper nootropic stack can do that a nootropic gum product will never be able to do. This is because of the fundamental limitations of a stick of gum: physical restrictions, difficulty of consistency, etc.
However, there is one major advantage that nootropic energy gums have over some regular nootropic stacks: convenience.
Nootropic gums will continue to develop, differentiate, and advance. The market will continue to grow. We anticipate interesting things ahead.
If you need a more convenient way to get an energy pick-me-up, then caffeine gum is probably a good option.
If you want to enhance every aspect of your cognitive function, from memory, to focus, to mood, to clarity, to long-term brain health, then you need a more comprehensive, daily, premium-quality nootropic supplement.
