Obviously, what they try to deliver varies product to product.

Some claim to deliver immediate improvements in mental performance, such as enhanced focus and longer attention spans.
Others simply claim to deliver a quick, sharp caffeine boost to keep you alert, focused and awake for a few extra hours.

However, there are some areas in which nootropic gum falls far short of genuine nootropic supplements.
If you’re looking for genuine, deep, and lasting improvements in cognitive function, nootropic gum will never be able to deliver as well as a comprehensive, daily nootropic stack.
Limitations Of Nootropic Gum
While nootropic energy gum offers several advantages over traditional brain boosting supplements, there are many areas where “smart energy gum” cannot come close to offering the same benefits as regular nootropic stacks.
Once we remove the convenience factor, nootropic gum is almost invariably going to be weaker, more short-term focused, and less comprehensive than a proper nootropic supplement.
The reasons for this are several.
For one thing, nootropic gum simply doesn’t have the physical room to accommodate the breadth of quantity of ingredients found in the best, most comprehensive nootropics.
For another, nootropic gum isn’t really suited for regular, every day use. It is not easily standardized and regimented into habit.
You are much less likely to chew a stick of gum for the same amount of time each and every morning than you are to take a capsule at the same time each day.
Nootropic gum can actually become pretty inconvenient if you want something to use on a long-term basis.
Necking a couple of capsules with your breakfast is easy. Chewing a stick of gum for a few minutes is less so.

There are many different things we would look for in a good nootropic gum supplement.
What makes a good nootropic gum supplement will vary according to what the product actually aims to deliver.
As we said above, different products can aim to deliver very different things: some aspire to enhance cognitive function generally, while others just aim to give you an energy kick.
However, there are some things which all products must offer if they are to be considered a “smart energy gum”.
They must contain some combination of the following if they are to have any chance of improving your focus, clarity, and attention-span:
- Ginkgo biloba
- Rhodiola rosea
- Cholinergic (e.g choline bitartrate)
Not all of these ingredients are necessary, and since they are being consumed through saliva after chewing, the quantities we would look for in the gum itself will differ from the quantities we look for in a nootropic stack.
However, for a gum product to be seriously considered a “smart energy” or nootropic product, it will need to contain some or all of these ingredients.
Other ingredients we always look for in a nootropic supplement have been left out as they only really work when used regularly and repeatedly. As such, they will offer little value in a nootropic gum product.
There is also an ideal caffeine dose which a gum must approximate to if it is to be considered a high-quality caffeine gum.
The amount of caffeine found in commercially-available caffeine gums will vary wildly. They will range from the pointless to the dangerous.
Generally speaking, we think 30-50mg of caffeine is sufficient for a serious caffeine gum supplement to have per serving.
This is less than you might find in a cup of coffee, but it is more than enough to provide the kind of energy jolt you might need in the boardroom, in the gym or on the field.
Consuming caffeine through your saliva is different to drinking it and allowing your stomach to digest it. it will hit your system much faster, and have a more pronounced effect.
As such, the equivalent of a small, weak cup of coffee is more than enough for 99% of users.
Is Caffeine Gum Safe?
There are, of course, safety concerns when it comes to using gum with added caffeine.
The main concern is obviously the danger of consuming too much caffeine.
It is really easy to consume too much caffeine through gum simply because you aren’t used to getting it this way. You don’t instinctively know when you’re having too much.
If you get all of your caffeine through coffee, then you know when you’re having too much: “No thanks, that’ll be 6 cups before 12. Better cool off…”.
But you can’t gauge it as easily with caffeine gum.
You can quite easily chew through 4 or 5 sticks before you realize what you’re doing. Gum is, by nature, an absent-minded consumable. You can get through a pack without blinking an eye. Since you’re also consuming caffeine as you chew this gum, this is a big danger.
The side effects of consuming too much caffeine are massively damaging to cognitive performance. They include anxiety, insomnia, jitteriness, light-headedness, lack of focus, confusion, and so on.
These side effects can become more pronounced if caffeine consumption remains high. Long term side effects of caffeine over-consumption can be extremely serious.
Is Nootropic Gum Right For You?
Whether or not a smart energy gum product is right for you depends entirely on your particular needs.
As explained above, there are things that a proper nootropic stack can do that a nootropic gum product will never be able to do. This is because of the fundamental limitations of a stick of gum: physical restrictions, difficulty of consistency, etc.
However, there is one major advantage that nootropic energy gums have over some regular nootropic stacks: convenience.
